"Diet culture is the culture of dieting with the intention of weight loss. More specifically, it's a belief system that values thinness and a socially constructed ideal of beauty above our health and wellbeing."
Diet culture encourages drastic changes to your lifestyle in exchange for quick results.(Cutting out food groups, detoxes, meal replacement products, skinny pills, crazy intense workouts.)
If you’re trying to lose weight and you’re feeling overwhelmed and bombarded by the false promises of fad diets, read on and I’ll simplify things for you using science based evidence that doesn’t require you to make any drastic changes.
Believe it or not, fad diets do not contain metabolism boosting magic. When you partake in a fad diet you'll probably lose weight, but the reason you're losing weight is because you're in a calorie deficit. A caloric deficit is any shortage in the amount of calories consumed relative to the amount of calories required for maintenance of current body weight.
Instead, try making small changes to your daily habits that can be maintained over a long period of time. For example; Setting a step goal, eating the foods you love within a calorie deficit, drinking more water, eating less processed foods, finding fun workouts.
You don’t have to kill yourself to get long lasting results. All you need is consistency and patience.
The reason these fad diets don’t usually work long term is because the changes you’re making are too extreme and not sustainable. When you can’t maintain the initial weight loss, you may give up, gain the weight back and eventually try a different diet. That’s how the diet industry keeps you in the yo-yo cycle. The truth is, they don’t want you to be able to maintain your weight loss because they want your money.
My advice? Ditch the diets. Change takes time. Start small and don’t give up on yourself.
